Dr. Ted Byers
Dr Byers has enjoyed the private practice of general dentistry since 1992 in both Scottsdale and Sedona, AZ. A Native of Newcastle, ME, Dr Byers grew up in Oklahoma City, OK where he earned professional degrees in both Psychology and Dentistry. Upon graduation, he moved to Arizona and has not looked back.
“Seeking new opportunities to assist in solving patient’s dental problems, simply, comfortably and easily, are a hallmark of my professional philosophy. I have found through years of experience using computers to assist in patient care is extremely beneficial to all involved”. Dr Byers was invited to join Flagstaff Dental in early 2012 and began my associateship with Dr Shanahan and his team at Flagstaff Dental.
“The greatest benefit I can provide a patient is first, listening to their concerns, answering questions and addressing any fears they might have regarding their visit. Afterward, I believe a thorough exam, accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan, allows the patient to make choices in a caring treatment relationship based on trust. Utilizing state of the art technology to make restorations such as crowns in a single visit that look and feel great is where our dentistry is TODAY. Replacing single missing teeth with precision placed dental implants or a whole mouth, with computer designed and milled dentures, make my job much more rewarding today than in the past.
Dr Byers is an avid Road Cyclist, Mountain Biker, Hiker, and Scuba Diver. He enjoys spending time with his pet Whippet, and traveling the world for adventure with his significant other.
Dr. James Mast
I arrived in northern Arizona in 1972 as a fresh-faced, mid-westerner, armed with a brand-new D.D.S. degree from Ohio State University, and, never having seen a real "native American" before, I was employed by the Indian Health Service in Winslow, providing dental care on the reservation. I immediately became enamored with the southwest; the huge expanses of vistas, the sunny, blue skies, the magnificent mountains, so drastically different from Ohio.
It wasn't long before I realized that I had left Ohio for good and when my selective service requirement with the Indian Health Service was fulfilled, I quickly set up my private dental practice in nearby Flagstaff, and I've been happily meeting and treating patients since 1975, now even sometimes seeing the 3rd generation of original patients.
I dido't leave my "inherited" love of gardening behind in Ohio, though, and I soon began an "avocation" as an avid gardener. Flagstaff's climate and growing conditions being quite different than Ohio"s, I soon realized that I needed some experienced direction. I enrolled in the inaugural(1991) "Master Gardener" class for the Coconino County Agricultural Extension Service(University of Arizona) and, since becoming a certified "Master Gardener," I have consistently tried to volunteer my free time to "give back" to the community in the area of gardening; as a leader in 4-H, as a County Fair competitor, volunteer or judge, or giving my "tomato talks" for various community organizations, or businesses like "Viola's Nursery," or New Frontiers Marketplace. In 2010, I was recognized as the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Service "Extensionist of the Year" for the state of Arizona, an honor I'm truly proud of.
My association with "Team Shanahan" will allow me the opportunity to continue with my love of the profession of dentistry and time to devote to gardening, blogging (tomatojim.com) and speaking. I anxiously look forward to this new great adventure.
Marilyn
Registered Dental Hygienist
Hello! My name is Marilyn, and I am Dr. Shanahan’s full-time registered dental hygienist. I began my dental career 19 years ago as an assistant, and I loved the dental field so much that I was inspired to continue my education and become a hygienist. My favorite aspect of dental hygiene is helping our patients pursue a lifetime of good oral health. Every day, I look forward to being at this practice and working with our patients. Just being around them makes me want to better myself both professionally and personally.
I am originally from Phoenix. I moved to Flagstaff in 1988 to attend NAU and have been here ever since. This is a great place to spend time with my three boys and our three dogs. I also stay involved with my two younger boys by volunteering at their school, San Francisco de Asis Catholic School.
As a family, we love hunting, horseback riding, swimming, D-back games, and jazzercise.
Amanda
Financial Coordinator / Dental Assistant
Hi, I'm Amanda! I'm excited to welcome you and your family to the practice. I have been working in dentistry as an assistant for over eleven years and now also serve as our appointment coordinator. I was first inspired to work in dentistry by a friend whose enthusiasm for the profession was extremely contagious. I truly enjoy working in dentistry, especially being able to help others improve their health. Over the years, I've built many meaningful relationships with my patients, and I always look forward to seeing my patients during office visits.
I have lived in Flagstaff my whole life, and I now live here with my husband, Chad, and son, Hunter. Living in this area is great, especially because when I'm not at the practice, I enjoy hunting, camping, archery, and shooting. However, one of my favorite things is being a mom to my wonderful son!
Mia
Dental Assistant
I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to work in this dental practice 7 years ago. Dr. Shanahan and his staff trained me to be the best dental assistant I can be; I then received my DANB radiographic certification and have become very paSSionate about my position as a dental assistant. My goal for this practice and for you is to provide you with a very comfortable, professional, and thorough experience. We are very adamant about never allowing a patient to be in pain or uncomfortable. The doctors and staff I have had the pleasure of working with, strive for these same goals and are very compassionate and patient. We are all very close here and I consider this my second home and extended family. I absolutely enjoy coming to work and aiding Dr. Shanahan, Dr. Byers and Dr. Mast with giving their patients beautiful smiles and getting their patients out of pain. I love establishing new friendships with our patients and getting to know everyone. I moved to flagstaff when I was 11 from southern California, and have been here ever since. Outside of the practice I am very busy being a mom to my beautiful daughter Gianna. She is almost 7 years old and brings me so much joy every day.

Hello, my name is Jennifer. I started working in the dental field 11 years ago as a dental assistant and office manager. I received my radiographic certification at NAU in 2003. Financial Coordinator
I have you worked in the dental field for 5 years. What inspired you to work in the dental field was I had a class with someone who worked in a dental office, and she was the one who first got me interested in dentistry. I really enjoy working in a dental office and getting to know our family of patients. My your favorite thing about dentistry is getting to know our patients and knowing that we help people improve their oral health and often change/improve their lives as a result. What I enjoy most about dentistry is building relationships and seeing how the doctors help our patients improve their smiles and oral health. I really enjoy working with a group of people who all love what they do and are passionate about dentistry. Having a mindset that is focused on our patients comfort and health helps me feel proud to work for this office. In my spare time I love to hike, travel, and play volleyball.
